New diesel fee to be introduced in London
New proposals by The mayor of London will see a daily “toxicity charge”
According to The Times drivers of diesel cars face some the world’s toughest sanctions for driving diesel vehicles in London under new proposals set out by the new Mayor. Sadiq Kahn this week visited Great Ormond Street Hospital and met children who are being treated for respiratory problems which have been exacerbated by poor air quality.
He outlined a daily £10 charge that be imposed next year on petrol and diesel cars made before 2005 entering central London. He is hoping by the end of the decade the fee will be extended to pre-2015 diesel cars and the charging zone will be some ten times bigger.
Over the past 12 months diesel emissions have been topical after it was found that VW had fitted some of their cars with a device that helped cheat emissons tests. VW have already agreed to buy back or fix cars that have been effected in the US but are yet to agree any compensation deals in the UK.
