Prostate Cancer Breakthrough: More Men Living Longer Thanks to New Treatments

There is encouraging news for thousands of men living with prostate cancer. New research has found that men diagnosed with advanced, incurable prostate cancer are living longer than they were just a decade ago, thanks in part to improvements in NHS treatment.

For patients and their families, the findings offer genuine hope, particularly for those who may previously have been told that little more could be done.

Prostate Cancer Death Rates Fall Significantly

A major study published by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine examined the records of approximately 45,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to other parts of their bodies.

The findings are striking.

In 2015, 56% of men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer died within three years. By 2022, that figure had fallen to 47%.

That means considerably more men are surviving beyond three years, despite having a form of cancer that cannot currently be cured.

New Prostate Cancer Treatments Are Making a Difference

So, what has changed?

One of the biggest developments has been the introduction of more effective chemotherapy and hormone treatments, including drugs such as docetaxel, enzalutamide and abiraterone.

Doctors can now combine different treatments to slow the spread of cancer, improve patients’ quality of life and, importantly, give them more time with their families.

We have previously reported on new life-extending prostate cancer treatments approved for NHS use, and these latest findings provide further encouragement that medical advances are making a real difference.

However, there is still much work to be done. Almost half of men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer die within three years.

More Men Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer – Why Early Detection Matters

The research also highlights a concerning trend.

Around 60,800 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in England in 2025, an increase of approximately 7% on the previous year.

Of these, more than 6,300 were diagnosed after the cancer had already spread.

Although new treatments are improving survival, discovering prostate cancer before it spreads can make an enormous difference to the treatment options available.

The difficulty is that prostate cancer often develops without obvious symptoms, particularly in its early stages.

We have previously examined the importance of prostate cancer screening and early diagnosis, including the role of PSA blood tests and the potential consequences when warning signs are overlooked.

Delayed Prostate Cancer Diagnosis – Could You Claim Compensation?

While these medical breakthroughs are welcome, they also highlight why timely diagnosis remains so important.

What happens when a patient loses the opportunity for earlier treatment because their cancer was not diagnosed when it should have been?

A failure to investigate an abnormal PSA result, an unreasonable delay in referring a patient to a specialist or missed opportunities to carry out further tests can sometimes have devastating consequences.

In some cases, a delay may mean that cancer which could have been treated with the intention of curing it has progressed to an incurable stage.

At R James Hutcheon Solicitors, we specialise in investigating delayed prostate cancer diagnosis compensation claims where patients believe that avoidable medical mistakes have affected their treatment, prognosis or life expectancy.

Not every delayed diagnosis amounts to medical negligence. However, where substandard medical care has caused avoidable harm, there may be grounds for compensation.
