In an article published by The Times on October 11, 2024, Josie Ensor reports on Pelham Spong’s allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed, the late owner of Harrods. Spong, who waived her right to anonymity, claimed that she was trafficked and sexually assaulted by Al Fayed in 2008. She reported the incident to the Metropolitan Police in 2017, but was told that Al Fayed, due to his poor health, could not be questioned. The police concluded there was “no realistic chance of a prosecution.”

Spong alleges that Al Fayed’s recruiters arranged for her to travel from the Ritz in Paris to his London residence, where she was subjected to a gynaecological examination and was later forcibly kissed by Al Fayed. She also recalled being offered business opportunities in exchange for sexual relations. Despite providing substantial evidence, including emails and travel documents, her case was not passed to the Crown Prosecution Service, with a police officer stating that a conviction was unlikely.

Since a recent BBC documentary aired, the Met Police have been investigating 40 new allegations of sexual assault against Al Fayed, in addition to the 21 they were already aware of. Spong expressed frustration over the lack of action, particularly as the police had warned her against going public, citing concerns it would “complicate” her case. According to The Times, Spong’s account suggests a well-organized system of recruitment and abuse, enabled by Al Fayed’s staff.

Spong, it is said by the newspaper considering pursuing compensation against Mohamed Al Fayed has become the first American accuser to come forward, although several others have made similar accusations.

The Metropolitan Police stated that, despite the numerous complaints, five cases were brought to the CPS, none of which led to further action. The police have since acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and urged any additional victims to come forward.
