A groundbreaking new womb cancer test called WID-easy has been approved for use in the UK, offering women a less invasive and highly accurate method for detecting the disease. Developed by Sola Diagnostics with support from University College London (UCL), the test marks a significant step forward in early cancer detection for women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding.

What is the WID-easy Test?

The WID-easy test works in a similar way to a COVID-19 PCR test — using a simple vaginal swab to collect a sample for laboratory analysis. This approach is far less invasive than the traditional transvaginal ultrasound or hysteroscopy, both of which can cause discomfort and distress for patients.

A 2023 study published in The Lancet Oncology found the WID-easy test to be just as accurate as ultrasound for detecting womb cancer. Importantly, it also showed a significant reduction in false positive results, which could prevent unnecessary invasive procedures for women who do not have cancer.

Who is Eligible for the WID-easy Test?

The test has been approved for use in the UK for women over 45 years old who experience abnormal uterine bleeding, a key symptom of womb cancer. The test is designed to speed up diagnosis and reduce the anxiety associated with more invasive investigations.

A Breakthrough for Women’s Health in the UK

Experts have praised the WID-easy test for addressing a long-standing gap in women’s healthcare. The chief executive of the gynaecological cancer charity The Eve Appeal welcomed the new test, noting its potential to improve early diagnosis rates and reduce patient anxiety. The test is also expected to benefit Black women, who statistically face later-stage diagnoses and poorer health outcomes for womb cancer.

Delayed Cancer Diagnosis and Your Rights

While advancements like the WID-easy test are positive, delays in diagnosing cancer remain a serious issue in the UK. If you or a loved one has experienced a delay in diagnosing womb cancer or any other type of cancer, you could be entitled to compensation.
