ARNE SLOT, MY WAY
New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is taking a different approach to building a connection with the Anfield faithful. Unlike his predecessor, Jürgen Klopp, known for his passionate post-match fist-pumps, Slot is choosing to let the team’s performances speak for themselves.
Slot, who is set to lead Liverpool in his first Premier League match at Anfield this Sunday against Brentford, prefers to remain in the background. He believes that a strong bond with the fans will develop naturally through the team’s displays on the pitch rather than through personal gestures or exuberant celebrations.
Reflecting on his style, Slot commented, “I prefer to let the team play in the best possible way, allowing the fans to enjoy what they see. That’s how I believe a connection with the supporters will form.” He added that he doesn’t see himself engaging in post-match theatrics, like fist-pumps, but instead focusses on ensuring that the team performs well, which he believes will be enough to win over the fans.
Slot’s philosophy is rooted in a team-first approach, a principle he carried with him from his time at Feyenoord. He emphasised that while the players should be the ones acknowledging the fans’ support after a match, he’ll be there—but always in the background.
This ethos extends to his approach to player development as well. Slot believes that by improving the team as a whole, individual players will naturally reach new levels. He’s optimistic that this method will help stars like Mohamed Salah continue to thrive. “It’s about team structure,” Slot said. “When the team functions better, individuals like Mo [Salah] will naturally improve as part of that process.”
As Liverpool prepares to face Brentford, Slot’s focus remains on the collective effort, trusting that the results on the pitch will foster the bond with the fans without the need for showmanship.
Kick-off is at 4:30 pm on Sunday, with the match broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event.
