Further revelations about the VW emission test scandal

When it looked like Volkswagen were starting to recover from the Diesel emissions scandal, things seem to be getting worse. There have been reports in a number of German newspapers that the so-called cheating devices were an “open secret” in the company, countering claims that only a few “rogue” engineers were involved in the deception.

Ex-VW boss Martin Winterkorn, was apparently told that millions of vehicles had cheated emissions tests, more than a year before the scandal emerged. It has been claimed that bosses’ were aware of the test cheating for over a year and did nothing about it. This information has come to light from apparent leaked internal VW correspondence.

The leaked documents including emails are being investigated by German prosecutors and US lawyers. Germany has also suggested they may introduce random emissions tests for cars, similar to those of anti-doping tests used in sports to prevent rigging.

Mr Winterkorn and other senior figures at VW have maintained they knew nothing about the rigged emissions tests until September 2015 and they have refused to comment on this new revelation.  For more information please click here.
