The defendant admitted liability. The claimant, who was aged 62 and retired at the time of the incident, was seriously injured. The claimant was awarded £312,581 compensation for pain, suffering and loss of amenity, special damages and interest. The judge also accepted an award of compensation in respect of the claimant’s need to now use taxis rather than drive in his own car, so an extra amount of £300 per year for taxi journeys.  The judge also awarded approximately £5,300 for future DIY and gardening which the claimant would no longer be able to do.
