A girl’s Mother was killed in a fatal road traffic accident for which her Father admitted liability.
Following the woman’s death, the Father single handedly brought up the girl without employing a nanny He claimed for the loss of her Mother’s services under the Fatal Accidents Act (see dependency claims) The judge awarded £20,000 but declined the cost of employing a nanny.
The jury concluded that did not result from the deceased’s death but was the result of the discharge of the Father’s parental duties. Since a nanny was not and would never be employed. the concept of valuing lost services by reference to the cost of a commercial nanny.
