A man was employed by a contractor for internal and external work on a block of flats. He was on the first floor when he stopped to talk to colleagues. He lent against a guard-rail by the stairway. The guard rail then collapsed and caused the contractor to fall down the stairs. He suffered serious back injuries, fractured ribs, cuts and bruises to his head and also snapped tendons in his hand. When the investigation was carried out it was found that the rail was constructed and designed poorly. The company was fined £3,000.
