Subject: Man suffers brain injuries after falling through roof at work
A 39 year old man suffered brain injuries when he fell through a fragile roof.
The accident happened when he was carrying out repair work on a garage roof as a self-employed builder. Whist he was clearing moss and debris the fragile sheeting he was stood on gave way and he fell nearly three meters to the concrete floor below.
As a result the man suffered brain injuries and was left partially deaf. He also fractured his shoulder and lost his peripheral vision, whilst in hospital he also contracted MRSA.
After investigations it was discovered that no safety equipment such as harnesses, scaffolding or floor boards had been provided to prevent a fall. The firm was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £6,000.
