Subject: Man severs finger in accident at work
A company who makes marquees has been fined after a welder severed a finger on an unguarded drill at an accident at work claim.
While drilling holes into a section of aluminum, one of the welding gloves the man was wearing became entangled in the running drill, which was unguarded. He was unable to reach the stop button and as he pulled his hand away from the drill he severed the ring finger on his right hand. He was off work for three months, but has since returned to his duties.
Investigations found that the accident could have been prevented if the correct training and equipment had been given to the worker. He used the wrong type of glove for the work. As a result, the company was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £4,076 in costs.
