Subject: Man loses his arm at work: Workplace Accident

A recycling company had fined after a worker lost his arm after trapping it between a roller and the belt of a moving conveyor.

The man, 28 years old, had been asked by a supervisor to clear a blockage whilst others took a break. Whilst doing this, his arm became caught and drawn in to a roller as he accessed the opening. As a result, he had to have his right arm amputated.

The machine had had no safe guarding to prevent an accident. It was also discovered that no risk assessment had been carried out for the machine and procedures undertook.

The company was fined £10,000 and was ordered to pay a further £5,944 in costs plus £5,000 in compensation.
