Occupational Deafness, Industrial Deafness or Noise Induced Hearing Loss as it is sometimes referred to, is a deterioration of a person’s hearing over a prolonged period of time as a result of their working environment.
“Hearing loss claims” is the term used to describe claims for compensation for hearing damage made by workers or ex workers in factories, mines, foundries or other work places who have been exposed to excessive noise over an extended period of time or to single blasts of extremely loud noises, such as at aeronautical and demolition work places.
In the United Kingdom, thousands of people have been affected by industrial deafness. Employees can be put at risk in many different industries particularly shipbuilding, coal mining, metal manufacturing and engineering [factory environments] where noisy machinery is used.
One common hearing problem is tinnitus, which is a buzzing sound in the ears that is often caused by excessive noise levels. In some cases, tinnitus can be sporadic – but for some, this hearing problem can disrupt daily life, make sleeping difficult and even lead to anxiety and depression.
Many workplaces often require employees to work in environments with noise levels will be hazardous to your hearing. Employers have a responsibility to provide their employees with suitable hearing protection. If your employers have failed to take suitable steps to protect your hearing, then you may be entitled to compensation.
Damage caused to hearing may not immediately be noticed and may worsen over a period of time and therefore it is recommended that when working in a noisy environment you regularly have your hearing tested so you can recognise any loss of hearing at an early stage.
