Subject: 63 Year old worker suffers crush injuries
A 63 year old man who had been driving for over 40 years suffered severe crush injuries when a loading shovel reversed into his HGV truck, trapping him.
The accident happened when he was cleaning coal debris from the tailgate of his 30-tonne HGV when the loading shovel backed into him. The man suffered severe crush injuries to the chest and abdomen and was in hospital for a month. He also later had to undergo surgery after developing a hernia on the wound from the original operation. He suffers from ongoing back pain, has difficulty walking and has symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder.
Investigations found that the work had not been properly planned, if there was proper planning and organisation the accident could have been avoided. The company was fined a total of £6,000.
