Subject: 37 Year old man suffers life changing injuries after accident at work

A 37 year old man has sustained life changing work injuries after he was crushed and burned by falling machinery in an accident at work.

The work place accident happened when he was removing waste material from a metal casting machine when part of it became detached and fell on him, pinning him against a storage bin. The falling machinery weighed 964kg and had a temperature of between 100 and 250°C.

The man suffered severe burns to 25 per cent of his body, namely his abdomen, chest and left arm, half of which were full thickness burns. He required skin grafts, while his crush injuries meant he also had to have part of his bowel removed. He had to go into intensive care and was on life support for 18 hours.

Investigations later found that the method used by the company was unsafe and employees were given inadequate training needed to perform. As a result, they were fined £120,000 and ordered to pay £55,000 in costs.
