Subject: 27 Year old worker sustains burns after being injured in explosive reaction at work
A 27 year old male suffered burns to the top of his body and was hospitalised for two weeks following an explosion at work.
The accident at work, it is claimed, occurred when the worker was using an industrial vacuum cleaner when the aluminum powder reacted with water, creating hydrogen gas. The chemical reaction caused an explosion, burning the man. As a result, the man was off work for three months before returning.
It was reported that had a proper risk assessment been carried out on the vacuum, the accident could have been prevented.
The company responsible was fined £7,000.
